Fiorentina Coach Paulo Sousa says he aims ‘to have already won the Champions League’ in five years’ time.

The former Basel boss arrived in Florence in the summer and has taken them to second place in Serie A after 15 rounds of action.

The Portuguese spoke of his ambition as a Coach but admits that it has been a surprise that his side are competing for the Scudetto.

"We had a good pre-season, but I didn’t think we would compete for first place, despite the extraordinary attitude of my players,” Sousa told A Bola.

“My perspective in life is always to think about how to improve.

"It wasn’t a problem to work for the clubs that weren’t at the top level. Above all, I’m grateful to life because I do the work I love and I get paid to do it. And I continue to give thanks for the opportunities that life gives me.

"Five years’ time? I hope to have already won the Champions League! I work so that my path to success is as short as possible. My ambition is to win as a Coach what I have won as a player, even if the perspective of a Coach is different from that of a player. Being a Coach also helps you grow as a person.

"What’s special about Fiorentina? It’s the only club in the city, which has a lot of passion and energy. The economic balance and the prestige of the Della Valle family give peace of mind to those who work here.”
