Andrea Soncin has terminated his contract with Venezia by mutual consent so that he can become the new coach of the Italy Women’s team.

The Azzurre have been without a coach for over a month, since Milena Bertolini tended her resignation in the wake of an embarrassing group stage exit in the 2023 World Cup.

They had started out by beating Argentina 1-0, only to then lose 5-0 to Sweden and 3-2 with South Africa.

The search for a new tactician took second fiddle to the hunt to replace Roberto Mancini at the helm of the men’s team, when Luciano Spalletti was chosen.

Although the women’s team has not officially got a new coach yet, Soncin did announce today that he terminated his contract with Serie B side Venezia by mutual consent.

He was the coach of their Under-19 youth team and his only coaching experience is at Venezia in various roles, including interim coach for five games in 2022.
