A mural in the city of Oliena, Sardinia, the birthplace of Serie A and Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, was unveiled on Friday with the former striker attending the event.

The 56-year-old returned home to Sardinia on Friday and took part in the unveiling of a mural painted in his honour.

It represents the former Cagliari, Parma, Napoli and Chelsea forward, the logs of the clubs he played for and the trophies he won during his career.

Zola took a picture in front of the mural and posted it on Instagram, with a message: “My journey began here. It all began here. And, throughout the world, I have always brought my land, my people, with me: in my heart and my thoughts. This mural is my most precious trophy. Grazie, Oliena.”

The former Italy international scored 90 goals in 238 Serie A appearances, plus 80 in 312 games with Chelsea, where he played from 1996 until 2003, when he returned to Cagliari, retiring in 2005.
