Genoa striker Giovanni Simeone admits he has yet to be congratulated by his father, Atletico Madrid boss Diego, on his goal against Pescara on Sunday.

Simeone followed in his father’s footsteps by heading to Serie A over the summer with Genoa, and after opening his account in Italian football, El Cholito is ready to emulate his dad’s “mean streak and desire to win”.

“I still haven’t heard from him,” the 21-year-old told Il Secolo XIX.

“I took his mean streak, his desire to win. [Is he] proud? I think so.
