Although he won La Liga and was in the Champions League Final last season, Simeone was on the bench of struggling Serie A minnows Catania from January to June 2011.
“At Catania it was a real learning curve, as I grew amidst difficulties to avoid relegation,” he told Clarin.
“With Atletico I had a squad at my disposal that allowed us to grow all together, players, club and staff, to achieve great results.”
Simeone has been tipped as a future boss of Argentina and won’t rule it out.
“I live day by day. Right now I want to keep improving this team, as we mustn’t lose our philosophy and focus on building our future so that we can compete in every tournament.”
