Former Lazio and Bologna star Beppe Signori is recovering after he was hospitalised with a pulmonary embolism. “I was about to have a heart attack.”

A few weeks before his 51st birthday, the striker was rushed to hospital and spent five days in intensive care at the Sant’Orsola clinic in Bologna.

“My heartbeat was 160bpm, whereas when I was an athlete, it was around 50. Basically, I was about to have a heart attack,” Signori told Il Resto del Carlino newspaper.

“From a simple check-up, I went straight to cardiology intensive care, where I remained for five days. I could feel the tachycardia and was really tired. They discovered I had a pulmonary embolism.

“It was a bolt from the blue, but the worst is behind me now.”
