Duvan Zapata scored his first goal in five months to give Atalanta all three points away to Torino and keep them in the hunt for a European place.

The Granata stunned Lazio last week and were seeking another upset, but Nemanja Radonjic joined Ola Aina, David Zima and Ronaldo Vieira on the treatment table. La Dea missed Ademola Lookman, Matteo Ruggeri, Hans Hateboer and Caleb Okoli.

Davide Zappacosta opened the scoring with a run down the left, taking on Valentino Lazaro and squeezing the finish in from the tightest of angles at the near post to surprise Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. The former Toro player refused to celebrate as a sign of respect for his old club.

Nikola Vlasic came on at half-time and made an immediate difference, stinging Marco Sportiello’s gloves from distance with a swerving strike, while Duvan Zapata hit the side-netting and Ricardo Rodriguez’s finish was smothered.

Aleksei Miranchuk hit a sudden snapshot against his parent club and the deflection made it a remarkable save for Sportiello, who could only parry it into the path of Antonio Sanabria to equalise on the rebound.

Ederson tested Milinkovic-Savic from a tight angle after a strong run and Zappacosta blasted straight at the goalkeeper, but Atalanta restored their advantage with a solo effort from Duvan Zapata.

The Colombian had not found the net in over five months, but he surged down the left, cut back to send Perr Schuurs to ground and blasted in from a difficult angle with his right boot. His only other goal this season was against Lecce in November 2022.
