Deputy health minister Pierpaolo Sileri has confessed that the idea of Serie A resuming this season ‘seems farfetched’.

Clubs were expected to be able to restart training on May 4 with a view to fulfilling fixtures again in early June, as part of the government’s Phase Two coronavirus response.

However, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte confirmed that measure would only apply to individual sports and Sileri has now cast further doubt on Calcio coming back in 2019-20.

However, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte confirmed that measure would only apply to individual sports and Sileri has now cast further doubt on Calcio coming back in 2019-20.

“It seems farfetched to me at the moment,” replied the politician when asked by Radio Rai 1 whether Serie A could resume.

“It’s not a game of tennis or the F1 championship. In football there’s physical contact between players, so there could be a risk of the virus spreading.

“I’m concerned about the health of our sportspeople.”
