Napoli completed a remarkable late comeback from 2-0 down to pick up a point against Genoa, as Mattia Bani and Mateo Retegui goals were cancelled out by Giacomo Raspadori and Matteo Politano scorchers.

The Partenopei were eager to shake off their surprise defeat to Lazio, who curiously were also the side beaten by Alberto Gilardino’s Genoa earlier this season. Matteo Politano was not fully fit after international duty, so Eljif Elmas stepped in, while the hosts continued to miss Junior Messias, Ridgeciano Haps and Alessandro Vogliacco.

The visitors had long periods of possession without really making much impact, as Giovanni Di Lorenzo dribbled into the box and his shot was charged down by Mattia Bani.

Mateo Retegui’s long-range strike bounced right in front of Alex Meret, who just about managed to push it round the post for a corner.

It was from that set play that Genoa took the lead, as an Albert Gundmundsson corner was flicked on by Koni De Winter for Bani to practically crouch down for the free header at the back post. Napoli were angry, claiming De Winter had pushed Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa.

Kvicha Kvaratskhelia prodded a pull-back onto the side-netting from a tricky angle, but despite all the possession, it was again Genoa who were lethal in their finishing.

A corner was taken short, Meret tried to punch it away and collided with teammate Leo Ostigard, then Kevin Strootman set up Retegui to fire in from 12 yards.

Kvaratskhelia went on a strong run after combining with Matias Olivera, cut off by Strootman, then Osimhen managed to hold off Rade Dragusin for a flick towards the empty net, but it was cleared off the line and wouldn’t have counted due to an offside position.

Albert Gudmundsson’s long-range curler was not too far from the top corner, but Napoli got back into it when Giacomo Raspadori hit a thunderbolt with his left foot into the near top corner after a Jens Cajuste assist, surprising the goalkeeper.

Gudmundsson curled just wide again and Cajuste blasted straight at Josep Martinez, while Matias Olivera penalty appeals were rejected because Bani was already sliding along with his arm on the ground to hold him up when the cut-back hit it.

Napoli completed the comeback in real style, as Piotr Zielinski floated a ball over the top and substitute Politano watched it come down before smashing a spectacular left-foot volley into the top corner.

Gudmundsson rolled across the face of goal and a deflection took it just beyond Morten Thorsby for what would’ve been a simple tap-in.
