Gianluca Caprari scored the decisive goal in stoppage time as La Doria leapfrogged SPAL in the Serie A standings.

Semplici’s men are now bottom of the division, but the coach felt they deserved more from the match.

“We played to our potential in this match,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We tried to create chances, but we didn’t manage to score. In the end, the injury [of conceding a late goal] arrived.

“We made some big mistakes and it’s one of those moments where we put ourselves in trouble, but we can’t give up.

“We didn’t deserve to lose, but this is football. We have to roll up our sleeves and believe in what we are doing.”

The 52-year-old then called for his team to respond quickly and rise to the challenge that lay ahead.

“I’m sorry because we kept the ball well. We just weren’t precise enough. We’ve never been in this situation before and now we need to react.

“We need to do something more, also taking advantage of what we learnt from this match.

“Everything is going wrong at the moment, but we have to bring the luck back on our side.

“We don’t have to think too much about the table, but we have to pull something more out of the hat.”

On the other hand, Semplici praised wingbacks Gabriel Espeto and Arkadiusz Reca for their positive starts at the club.

“They played well again. Obviously they need to grow, they are young lads.”
