Leonardo Semplici celebrated a thrilling 3-2 victory on Spal’s first Serie A home game for 50 years. “We believed to the end.”

The Ferrara-based club had a 2-0 lead and risked throwing it away when Udinese fought back for 2-2, but a stoppage-time Luca Rizzo curler proved decisive.

“We really cared about starting on the right foot in front of the home fans, but made life difficult for ourselves by repeatedly failing to get the third goal,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We did well to believe to the end and this is an important victory for us. We are improving and can grow via games like this, keeping our sights set on safety.”

VAR was used on several incidents at the Stadio Mazza and seemed to take far longer than in other arenas.

“It’s a very useful technology, but obviously it’ll need to speed up the process as we all get more accustomed to it.”
