The former SPAL boss made the ideal debut after replacing sacked Eusebio Di Francesco, as the Sardinians snatched all three points in this relegation dogfight at the Stadio Scida with Leonardo Pavoletti’s header and a Joao Pedro penalty.

“My desire to return coincided with this important opportunity. Cagliari’s position in the table wasn’t the best, but looking at the names in the squad, I was confident we could do really well,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We started with some difficulties, I think due to the moment in the table, but I liked the unity of the side, the solidity and the determination they showed, especially after we went down to 10 men.

“Both our strikers were on target, it was important to start on the right foot. It was more psychological work than tactical, with a series of meetings with the group as well as individuals.

“We had to treat these next 15 games as a new season entirely. It’s not easy, having a squad of this quality with so few points means clearly there have been problems, but I think we can draw out the best in these players and what they had showed until recently.”
