Leonardo Semplici has challenged SPAL to prove their doubters wrong after an impressive draw at Lazio.

The newly-promoted club are widely tipped to struggle on their return to Italy’s top-flight, but they earned an unexpected point in their opening match of the season.

“We played a really good match against a strong team,” Semplici said after a goalless draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

“We played the game in the right way, with the right character.

“We knew about the problems we would face, but we had confidence and courage.

“It isn’t easy, especially at the Olimpico.”

Semplici added that, despite this promising start, the Ferraraclub have achieved nothing yet.

“We haven’t achieved anything but it is a result that gives us confidence.

“To take a point from here, I hope, is a starting point.

“The target is 40 points. Many think we will go down, we will try to prove most people wrong.”
