The Spallini were again furious after a controversial decision was upheld using VAR in this 2-1 home defeat to Sampdoria.

“We seem to be fairly unfortunate at the moment with referees and I’d call it an excess of VAR,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think to disallow a goal for a couple of centimetres offside when he wasn’t even near the ball is anomalous. We didn’t have a good approach to the first half, but did better after the break and had the chances to equalise.

“We deserved more this afternoon. Samp have players of great quality, like Fabio Quagliarella, and we were a little distracted on some situations.

“It’s disappointing, as time is running out and we need to start putting more points under lock and key.”

This was Semplici's first game back almost two weeks on from emergency surgery to remove an intestinal blockage.
