Sassuolo director Giovanni Carnevali reiterates there is ‘no chance’ of Domenico Berardi joining Juventus, but denies reports the captain is refusing to play. ‘He is behaving perfectly, like a great professional.’

There had been negotiations between the two clubs earlier in the summer and the asking price was circa €30m, the same quoted to Lazio, Fiorentina, Napoli and others.

The Neroverdi had been very clear from the start of those talks that a deal had to be done by August 18 or they would be keeping the player, so when that deadline passed, it seemed to be over.

Yet Berardi has not played at all for Sassuolo this season, nor even been on the bench, amid rumours he is trying to force through a transfer to Turin.

“Berardi returned to training with the group midweek and he needs a little time to get back into shape. He will be available from the next round,” assured Carnevali to SassuoloNews following the defeat to Napoli.

“There is no chance he will join Juventus. We have been clear on this for some time, this is our decision and it will remain our decision.”

However, the director denied suggestions Berardi is refusing to pull on the Sassuolo jersey until he is sold to Juventus.

“Berardi is behaving perfectly, like a great professional and there are no problems. He just needs to recover a little bit, but we are convinced he will be back in shape very soon.”

Carnevali joins the many coaches and directors who feel it is unfair to start the season with the transfer window still open.

“It is damaging to the players and also to the clubs, because for us to play without our best star really makes a difference.”
