Furthermore, Zola will be brought in to assist the 59-year-old as he bids to make a quick transition to life in England.

The former Napoli boss is expected to put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the option for a third, worth around €6m a season.

Zola, meanwhile, scored 80 goals in 311 appearances for Chelsea between 1996 and 2003, winning two FA Cups, a League Cup, a Cup Winners’ Cup and a European Super Cup.

The ex-Partenopei and Italy forward was also voted as the club’s best-ever player by their fans towards the end of his spell at Stamford Bridge.

The pair will be joined at Chelsea by Napoli midfielder Jorginho, whose transfer is similarly imminent.
