Reports claim that Maurizio Sarri was behind Napoli’s decision not to sign Axel Witsel, rather than a dispute over image rights.

The Vesuviani appeared to be close to signing the Belgian international, but talks collapsed last night.

The Partenopei have experienced problems in getting transfers over the line in the past because of an insistence that they be allowed to control a player’s image rights.

However, Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli insists today that Maurizio Sarri convinced President Aurelio De Laurentiis not to do the deal.

However, Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli insists today that Maurizio Sarri convinced President Aurelio De Laurentiis not to do the deal.

It’s claimed the Coach spoke to De Laurentiis on the phone, and warned that he couldn’t guarantee Witsel a place in the team.

With the deal set to cost up to €25m, the patron didn’t want to have such an expensive squad player and pulled-out.

The claims must be taken with a pinch of salt, however, as Kiss Kiss Napoli is the official radio outlet of the club, so are far more likely to report the Napoli version of events.
