Empoli Coach Maurizio Sarri was “proud of the performance” in a 2-2 draw, but had been so close to beating Napoli.
The Tuscans were 2-0 up and seemingly untroubled for an hour at the Stadio San Paolo until a late comeback sealed by Duvan Zapata and Jonathan de Guzman.
“I am proud of the performance from my lads who played with character against a big club in a huge stadium,” Sarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“For a while we held the dream of taking away three points, but it can happen to be caught out here.
“It’s a shame we conceded a goal when we were down to nine men. I was sent off because I was angry, but did not offend anyone.”
Some Empoli players were spotted after the final whistle debating among themselves whether to celebrate this result or feel angry at fumbling a 2-0 lead.
“We must not lose sight of our status and risk this comeback putting out the fires of our enthusiasm, as this is a team that lives on enthusiasm,” warned Sarri.
