Maurizio Sarri denies fatigue is behind Napoli’s recent downturn in form – “we’ve had some bad luck”.

It has been noted that the Coach is not prone to rotating his team, leading to suggestions that a five-game winless run in all competitions is down to his players being tired.

“In some matches we had 29 chances to 13,” Sarri noted in his Press conference ahead of the Chievo game.

It has been noted that the Coach is not prone to rotating his team, leading to suggestions that a five-game winless run in all competitions is down to his players being tired.

“In some matches we had 29 chances to 13,” Sarri noted in his Press conference ahead of the Chievo game.

“But in Italy the culture is always to say that the problem must be physical. With Fiorentina we ran 12km per player, close to our best performance.

“We ran 129 metres per minute, in terms of metabolic power we did 11.98, our best of the season, our sprints over 3 metres were the best of the season.

“So those numbers can’t be disputed, the problem is that we didn’t take chances. In terms of goals conceded it’s evident we’ve had some bad luck.

“We suffered in Florence, but we could have won despite their best efforts.

“We’ve used the fewest players in the League? That’s meaningless if you’re evaluating partial data. The stats from the League mean nothing, you have to consider Europe too.”

Sarri was then asked about the prospect of the Scudetto, with the Partenopei having the opportunity to draw level with Juventus this weekend, at least temporarily.

“The lads have always talked about a dream, but to me there’s only one way and that’s to win. We have to beat a team which has a good record away from home.

“They’re physical, aggressive and much tougher than their position suggests.

“It has to be a dream, because our wage bill and budget doesn’t allow anything else. We need to dream, because dreams sometimes come true.”
