Napoli’s Maurizio Sarri has been named as Football Leader Coach of the Year, voted for by leading journalists.

The Partenopei boss took over from the club last summer after leaving Empoli and has immediately managed to launch a Scudetto challenge, a vast improvement from last season’s fifth-place finish.

The prize was voted on by a jury including Gianluca Di Marzio and leading figures from media outlets Mediaset, Gazzetta dello Sport, Tuttosport, Corriere dello Sport, Sky Sport Italia, Rai, Guerin Sportivo and the AIAC (Italian Association of Coaches).

The Football Leader website explained the reasons behind the choice to award the prize to Sarri.

“For having led Napoli with personality and intelligence, giving a precise tactical identity and introducing a spectacular, winning and international game,” read the statement on football-leader.it.

“Thanks to his coaching methods and management he’s also contributed to the growth and enhancement of Napoli’s squad.”

The prize will be handed to Sarri during an event in Amalfi on the 24-26 May.
