Riccardo Saponara confirms he came to Sampdoria largely for his ex-Empoli Coach Marco Giampaolo. “We wanted to work together again.”

The trequartista made the transfer deadline day move, on loan with option to buy for a total of €11m, after a difficult time at Fiorentina.

“My adventure at Sampdoria begins with a real spirit of renewal and the desire to prove myself after failing to express what I wanted to in the Viola jersey,” said Saponara in a Press conference.

“My adventure at Sampdoria begins with a real spirit of renewal and the desire to prove myself after failing to express what I wanted to in the Viola jersey,” said Saponara in a Press conference.

“I have so much more to prove on the football field. I’ll try to put my characteristics on to the pitch.”

Saponara won’t deny the presence of Coach Giampaolo was crucial, having the best period of his career under this tactician at Empoli.

“The respect as professionals and as people never went away and we kept in contact over the years. He is the first person I must thank for bringing me to Sampdoria.

“Working with a Coach you already know allows you to settle into the squad much quicker, as he hasn’t changed his working method.

“Giampaolo was fundamental in my decision to come to Sampdoria, as we spoke regularly, including on transfer deadline day. We both really wanted to work together again.”
