Santos confirm “there is a possibility” of signing Gabriel Barbosa, “but it depends on Inter and Gabigol. It’d be worth breaking the salary cap.”

The forward was born and raised at Santos before his €29.5m transfer to San Siro in August 2016, but was not given a single Serie A start and is also struggling for playing time during his loan to Benfica.

A return to Brazil seems imminent, with Flamengo and Sao Paulo also interested, but naturally a return to Santos is top of his wish-list.

“There is a possibility,” Santos President Jose Carlos Peres told Fox Sports Brasil.

“We hope he’ll make an effort to play with us. The negotiations depend on Inter and Gabigol. A great idol like him would undoubtedly be welcome.

“Santos have a salary cap, which we respect, but obviously in certain situations it can be broken, even if we wouldn’t want to. I think it’d be worth it.”
