Davide Santon has denied that he didn’t want to return to Inter as he’s officially presented as a Nerazzurro player.
The full-back returned to San Siro on transfer deadline day on Monday, but the move was the source of controversy after his girlfried Tweeted then deleted claims that he hadn’t wanted to move.
“It all happened at the last minute, in the space of two hours” Santon explained to assembled media.
“She [his girlfriend, Chloe Sanderson] comes from Newcastle and there was some confusion.
“In the end she told me to go if this team is where I wanted to go. The decision was taken together, because I have a family now.
“If I hadn’t wanted to come here, I wouldn’t be here. I wanted this, and I’m happy.
“I was at home when I got the call from Piero [Ausilio, Inter’s sporting director], I was surprised, but I was sure, and after two hours I called back and said yes.
“Everyone wanted to get it done, and now I’m here.
“I haven’t been playing for the last nine months due to injury, but I came here to be involved, and because this feels like home. I grew up here, I’m happy.”
Santon made his second Inter debut in the Coppa Italia in midweek, when the Nerazzurri were defeated by Napoli, and Santon admits that he wasn’t at his best.
“I want to redeem myself. I was walking in the second half, I hadn’t played for a while.
“I want to forget it, if I play on Sunday [against Palermo], I will not think about that game. It will be different, and I’ll be different.”
The 24-year-old also dispelled another rumour – that he grew up supporting Milan.
“I’ve never said I was a Milan fan,” Santon clarified.
“As I child I liked them, but I never said I was a Milan fan. I’ve always respected Inter and I always will.
“I really want to say that, because a lot of people describe me as Milan fan. I’m here and I support Inter.
“My past experience here is a positive memory. We won a lot, then a situation arose on the transfer market, and together with the club hierarchy we decided to make a change.
“I’m happy to return.”
