The Argentine, who signed a new one-year contract in the summer, had not played a competitive game for the club since April because of various fitness problems.

“I’m back at last,” the 35-year-old told Inter Channel. “It was a difficult game, but I felt quite good even though I've been out for nearly six months.

“I was sorry to miss out before now, but my teammates have been putting in a huge amount of work and effort.”

Inter started the season well under new boss Walter Mazzarri, but they’ve won just one of their last five after the 1-1 in Bergamo last night.

“We tried to go for it and win the game,” the centre-back added. “But a draw is perhaps a fair result in an evenly balanced tie.

“They didn't have a lot of shots, but they caught us out on our first mistake. But there's a long way to go and we can have our say in things until the very end.”

Argentine colleague Esteban Cambiasso was also happy that his outfit can now count on the player who is known as The Wall.

“Of course we're glad to have him back, but it's not as if he's been away because even when he's not playing he's still very important,” the midfielder noted.

“It's good to see him on the pitch again though. I think his performance tonight was on a par with the level we've become accustomed to over the years.”
