Sampdoria are celebrating their return to Serie A after just one year in the wilderness. “I always believed,” said Coach Beppe Iachini.

The Blucerchiati were stunned last season when they started off in the Champions League preliminary round and ended by going down into Serie B.

They won the promotion play-off final against Varese on Saturday to secure their step up along with Pescara and Torino.

“This promotion is truly wonderful and comes at the end of an amazing fightback,” said Iachini, whose side finished sixth.

“I want to dedicate this to my family, our extraordinary fans and President Riccardo Garrone, who put his faith in me and allowed us all to give our best.”

Iachini only took over in mid-November when replacing Gianluca Atzori, as the Blucerchiati were mid-table.

“I always believed, even if the situation was very difficult,” continued Iachini. “We had to make up for lost time and put the table back in order, which we achieved day by day.

“Will I stay at Sampdoria? Yes and I hope that I deserved it with my work on the field.”

Iachini’s contract that he signed in November included a clause securing an automatic renewal for a year if he won promotion.
