Sampdoria left the door open to Mario Balotelli. “Anything is possible and we are looking for a centre-forward.”

The Liverpool striker has been told in no uncertain terms that he’s no longer required at Anfield, training separately from the squad and left out of games.

He has also been linked with a move to Lazio, but only if they qualify for the Champions League, whereas at Samp he’d be reunited with old Italy teammate Antonio Cassano.

“I think anything is possible in football,” said Sampdoria director of sport Carlo Osti when asked whether Balotelli could arrive this summer.

“Right now we have a squad of young players and we have to make the most of them. From here to August 31 we will try to do something.

“We are lacking a midfielder and looking for a striker with different characteristics to the ones we have now. We may well need a centre-forward.

“However, the issue of the striker is not as important as the newspapers make out. We could stay as we are too.”

If the Blucerchiati sell creative midfielder Roberto Soriano to Milan, that would bring in funds for the €10m Balotelli transfer fee.

Samp are also in negotiations with free agent Dimitar Berbatov.
