Sampdoria are aware that with the sales of Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini, a cycle has come to an end at the club and a rebuilding phase is necessary.

Gasperini spent four years with Genoa, winning promotion to Serie B and getting the club back into Europe in quick succession to critical acclaim. He was dismissed in November.

Il Corriere Mercantile understands Sampdoria have made contact with Gasperini, although reports of a dinner and a tennis match with one of the club's directors have apparently been denied.

Sampdoria are also looking to bring in Walter Sabatini as their new director of sport. He is known to have a great relationship with Gasperini and could be lobbying for his appointment next season.

Gasperini is still under contract at Genoa until 2012 and it remains to be seen whether Enrico Preziosi would rescind his existing deal just so he could join his biggest rivals.
