Sampdoria were beaten 2-0 by Liga champions Atletico Madrid to get second place in the Trofeo Carranza.

The Blucerchiati had reached the Final by defeating Sevilla last night in Cadiz and fielded a completely revamped XI.

Emiliano Viviano needed a fine save to deny Raul Jimenez’s header, but Atleti took the lead in controversial circumstances.

Samp were completing a substitution for the injured Gonzalo Bergessio when Hector hit the bar and Saul was quickest to pounce on the rebound. The Blucerchiati complained they weren’t given time to get back into position, but the referee waved away protests.

In the second half Viviano was again decisive on Raul Jimenez and a Cristian Rodriguez header, while Federico Piovaccari and Francesco Fedato threatened an equaliser.

Gimenez doubled the Colchoneros advantage by sliding on to a corner kick from close range.

Fedato was unfortunate not to get a consolation goal late on, as his effort came off the upright.
