The Fiorentina man is waiting for swelling to reduce sufficiently on the joint before undergoing a final round of tests on his latest injury, to truly ascertain damage done and the potential recovery period.

For the Azzurri, whose Coach has reiterated that they will wait as long as they can before the World Cup for Rossi’s return, the estimate is of a two-to-three-month stop.

“Pepito has injured the collateral ligament injury and not the cruciate,” began Italy’s chief medic with the national team, Castellacci, on Lady Radio today.

“We feared the worst and luckily it was not so. Certainly, however, the problem with the collateral could undermine the cruciate, which must be kept under absolute monitoring.

“The return will depend on many factors – the healing of the ligament, the recovery of muscle tone and, above all, it will be important not to accelerate this process.

“I believe it will be between two and three months, but much will depend on mother nature. And on that, we can do very little…”
