Giuseppe Rossi is happy to have come through 70 minutes of Italy’s friendly with Republic of Ireland unscathed.

The Fiorentina forward virtually missed his club side’s entire second half of the season after suffering a knee injury shortly after the New Year.

However, he has been continuing his return to fitness with the Azzurri in the hope he will be able to feature at the World Cup in Brazil.

Speaking to Italian television after the goalless draw at Craven Cottage, the 27-year-old also expressed his sympathy for Riccardo Montolivo, who will miss the tournament following the fractured tibia he sustained tonight.

He also answered questions regarding a number of his fellow strikers in the Azzurri setup.

“On the pitch the injury didn’t seem that serious,” Rossi said. “Obviously we are all sad, no one wanted to see a great player like Riccardo leave the field like that.

“My condition? I’m fine, we were a little tired because of the work we’ve done at Coverciano but I’m happy. I played 70 minutes at a high level, there are still two weeks left so we’ll see.

“When you play as a second forward you need to try to get in the spaces between the midfield and the attack. That was my role this evening.

“Immobile Balotelli? Ciro likes to attack the spaces and Mario is more physical.

“Me and Cassano as a pair? First I want to get into the 23!”
