The Azzurri must beat the Republic of Ireland on Monday to have any hopes of progressing to the last eight, but a 2-2 draw in the other Group C game would bring their tournament to an end.

“I don’t think that Spain would agree to a draw,” Rossi, who plays his club football in the country with Villarreal, told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “They care too much about their image.

“I just can’t imagine players such as Cesc Fabregas, Xavi and Andres Iniesta taking to the field of play without thinking about winning a game.”

Rossi was hoping to be part of the Italy squad at the tournament, but he damaged knee ligaments last October and the same ones again in April which ruled him out.

“I miss Italy more than they miss me,” he modestly responded when asked about Cesare Prandelli’s side.

Rossi isn’t expected to be back in action until the early part of 2013.
