The centre-back hit the headlines this week when failing to agree terms of a contract renewal, suggesting the club wanted to lower his current wages.

Following this evening’s 2-1 Europa League victory away to Qarabag, his agent Raul Iglesias spoke to Calciomercato.com.

“I arrived in Italy ready to reach an agreement with Fiorentina. We weren’t asking for the moon, just the same economic conditions that he currently has.

“Gonzalo has always put the Viola at the centre of his career, but we won’t renew at these conditions. The club praised his performances and his goals, but (director Pantaleo) Corvino proposed a one-year deal earning 25 per cent less than his current salary.

“I returned to Argentina, because if this should remain the proposal, then we will not renew the contract.”

His current deal is due to expire in June 2017, so he’ll soon be a free agent.

The defender has been linked with a move to Milan, where he’d reunite with Vincenzo Montella, Mati Fernandez and Riccardo Montolivo.

“There were no negotiations with the Rossoneri over the summer, but from February onwards we are ready to talk to Milan, if they are interested.

“Fiorentina remain in first place for Gonzalo, as he appreciated them and has always been very happy in Florence. This is why last summer we didn’t want to hear any offers. Now we’ll wait a few months and then will be free to speak with anyone.

“Clearly he’d be pleased to work with Montella again and the Coach no doubt feels the same way. I repeat, there hasn’t been any contact with Milan. We received four offers but so far Milan were not among them.

“I can only say there are two European clubs and two from Argentina. Until February, Fiorentina have exclusivity, but from February we are free to reach an agreement with any other club.”
