Franck Ribery has backed Verona striker Luca Toni to return to the Italy squad in time for the World Cup in Brazil.

The veteran is seen as an outside bet to make Cesare Prandelli’s 23-man selection for this summer’s tournament, for his improved form this term back in Serie A.

Added to his 12 League strikes so far, the 36-year-old can count on the support of his former Bayern Munich teammate Ribery.

“Toni is a great striker, a great person on and off the field,” the French international has enthused to the Gazzetta dello Sport today.

“He is an expert, he is still a driver – Verona’s players who look to him, they will learn.

“He must return to the national team, even if I will not complain if he is not a starter. Dear Luca, I will see you in Brazil.”

The Gazzetta dello Sport also chased Toni for a reaction: “I will come with you if Benzema is injured. I joke, but to play again with Franck, the best…”
