It has been rumoured for weeks that Rangnick was being lined up to lead Milan with powers over both coaching and transfer strategy, becoming a Sir Alex Ferguson figure for the club.
Milan director Zvonimir Boban effectively confirmed this was true when telling La Gazzetta dello Sport that CEO Ivan Gazidis had “gone behind our backs” to contact Rangnick.
Now even Sport Expressen in Sweden have confirmed Rangnick will take over as both coach and director of sport next season, regardless of what results Stefano Pioli achieves.
Boban is already effectively out after that interview and public spat with Gazidis, with Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara expected to follow.
The issue now is whether they will remain in place until May like lame ducks or resign together to send a message.
