Napoli are reportedly getting somewhere with Dries Mertens, as the Partenopei might have taken important steps in his contract talks.

After scoring his 121st goal in the Azzurri shirt, Mertens has yet again proved his worth at the San Paolo and the club risk losing him on a free transfer this summer.

Calciomercato.com claims that Mertens’ representatives have opened up on the contract negotiation.

The report states that his lawyers have given President Aurelio De Laurentiis three reasons to reject a new deal and points out what could be the problem.

The Belgian could accept a two-year deal, after initially requesting three new seasons with the club, but there could still be an issue of the fixed salary and the sign on fee.

The outlet has revealed that there will be further contact between the two parties regarding the never-ending contract saga with the club’s all-time leading goalscorer – tied with Marek Hamsik.

Including his goals, Mertens has contributed 72 assists in his 310 appearances for the Partenopei and has been targeted by both Inter and Monaco.
