President Aurelio De Laurentiis has, according to Calciomercato.com, started working on a new deal until June 2025 for the midfielder, increasing his current wage of €1.5m a year.

In the new contract, the patron hopes to insert a release clause of more than €100m to keep possible suitors away, as the former Real Betis man has continued to develop under the leadership of Gennaro Gattuso at the San Paolo.

Former Betis coach Quique Setien, now at Barcelona, has been linked with the player but Napoli have allegedly set an €80m price tag on the 24-year-old and thus managed to keep the giants away.

Fabian’s current contract at the San Paolo expires in June 2023.
