Edy Reja admits it wasn’t the best of games at the weekend, but that the result was all that mattered for his Lazio side.

The Biancocelesti defeated Cagliari at the weekend only thanks to a late header from Modibo Diakite to end a run of two consecutive defeats.

“We were not in a happy moment and we had to win against Cagliari,” reflected Reja on Lazio Style Radio.

“It wasn’t a pretty game, but the performance did not matter. Fortunately, Diakite has removed us from trouble.”

The 66-year-old tactician was in the stands for the Week 29 fixture, serving a one-game suspension for his dismissal the previous weekend at Catania.

“I was away from the pitch, so I suffered a lot because I could not communicate in the way I wanted. But, I think [assistant Coach Giovanni] Lopez has done his duty by winning an important game and providing a fundamental base for the players.

“At this time, the League is only about the results, because as we have seen the others are struggling. Napoli was stopped by Catania – I wasn’t aware of the equaliser, so it was a nice surprise to hear the roar of the crowd.”

With nine games of the season remaining, the Aquile find themselves three points clear of Napoli and Udinese, who both drew at the weekend.

“The fight for the Champions League place will continue until the final moment, but winning after suffering extremely so against a team in good shape like Cagliari is a significant signal.

“We defended as 11, everyone sacrificed for the good of the team. There was great concentration.”
