Pepe Reina called Rafa Benitez “my football father” and invited Javier Mascherano to join them at Napoli.

The goalkeeper is on loan from Liverpool and spoke to Radio Kiss Kiss ahead of games against Udinese and Arsenal.

“Each individual match is the most important, which right now is Udinese. We’ve got to take it one game at a time.

“Benitez was very important in my decision to come here, as he knew me a long time ago, from 2005. He was the one who brought me to Liverpool and you could say he is my football father. The confidence he has in me is immense.

“My rapport with the fans and the city is splendid, which my family agrees with. I am very happy here! I prefer to come to a demanding city like Napoli, as they are similarly passionate to the Liverpool supporters. The people are affectionate and open, just like my home town of Cordova.

“I want to make it clear that this season my head is only on Napoli. It is certain I will return to Liverpool once the loan spell is over.”

Napoli have been linked with offers for Barcelona midfielder Mascherano and former Liverpool teammates Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel.

“I do keep in contact with Mascherano. He’s a lovely guy with a winning mentality, a real gladiator. Now he plays for Barça and I cannot say more than that, but if he wants to come then I can give him a hand.

“It is difficult to talk about Agger and Skrtel, as I don’t want to say anything that could hurt the Liverpool fans. They are among the best in Europe, so of course they could play for Napoli. Why not?”
