The striker has been recalled to the Azzurri squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Armenia and Denmark.

“I’m very happy to be back in the national set-up after more than a year,” he stated after Cesare Prandelli included him and teammate Alessandro Diamanti.

“It’s nice to find the national jersey again alongside a friend and a great player in Alino.

“But I want to thank all of my teammates here, boss Stefano Pioli, his staff and everyone at the club who have allowed me to start this season so well.”

The 2006 World Cup winner, who left Genoa for Bologna on transfer deadline day in August, hasn’t been selected by Prandelli since Italy played Slovenia in September 2011.

Gila, 17 goals in 47 caps, hasn’t played for his country since a 2-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland in June 2011.
