Real Madrid have surpassed Barcelona in the fight for Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz and reportedly want him in January.

The 23-year-old is going from strength to strength since he made the €30m transfer from Real Betis in the summer of 2018.

He has now become a regular in the Spain XI and is repeatedly linked with a return to La Liga.

Barcelona had been the most intrigued, but Monday’s Marca front page claims Real Madrid are determined to snap him up as early as January.

It is very unlikely Napoli would let Fabian Ruiz go mid-season, especially as they have a tense rapport with Real Madrid that broke down entirely over the summer due to James Rodriguez.

There is no release clause in Fabian’s contract, so Real Madrid would need to negotiate directly with President Aurelio De Laurentiis.
