The winners of the Champions League and Europa League faced off in Trondheim, Norway this evening to open the 2016-17 season proper.

Sevilla fought back under new Coach Jorge Sampaoli and equalised with Italy international Vazquez.

The former Palermo star scored with his first shot in a Sevilla jersey, pouncing on a Roberto Vitolo control to smash a half-volley from the edge of the box into the bottom far corner.

Vazquez had started out wide on the left, but was quickly moved into a trequartista role behind the strikers.

Sevilla seemed to be in better physical shape, having started their pre-season preparations earlier, and Sergio Ramos gave away a soft penalty by tripping Vitolo.

Yevhen Konoplyanka had only just come off the bench, but calmly stroked his penalty past Kiko Casilla.

Real Madrid poured forward to the final whistle and Rico was decisive on a Dani Carvajal strike, but deep into stoppages Ramos made up for his earlier error by nodding a Lucas Vazquez cross in from point-blank range.

It forced extra time in Trondheim and very quickly Sevilla were reduced to 10 men for a second Timothee Kolodziekczak bookable offence.

Ramos thought he had completed his brace with a diving header on 99 minutes, but it was disallowed for a shirt-tug. Lucas Vazquez had beaten Rico only to be denied by an Adil Rami goal-line clearance.

Rico’s heroics weren’t enough to take this clash to a penalty shoot-out, as with 60 seconds remaining Dani Carvajal went on a stunning solo run down the right and prodded in with the outside of the boot to give Real Madrid victory.
