“We want to end the season well. It won’t be easy, because Brescia are playing well and fighting in every game,” said Ranieri to the official Sampdoria website.

“We respect Brescia, but want to close with three points. It’s true that we lost three games since securing safety, but we did fight for every ball. When you play every two days, the difficulties do pile up and quality counts at the end.

“There haven’t been any training sessions, just trying to recuperate and be ready for the next match. I will say that the lads showed themselves to be great professionals and really became a team during this period.

“It has been such a strange season, totally transformed since the lockdown and playing without a crowd. I can say this because we have secured safety, but the teams that were relegated have alibis.

“I hope that next season can begin from scratch and with the fans, otherwise sport becomes futile.”
