“Don’t return to the pitch with your head elsewhere,” Ranieri told Il Secolo XIX. “I know very well, having been a player myself, that it’s one thing preparing to train for a game the next day, it’s another to do it if you don’t know when it will be, nor against whom.

“For this I ask you to lower the rhythm and always prepare as if you’re playing the game, every day. It’s a break that we can’t afford.”

Ranieri downplayed the concerns regarding the coronavirus by joking about not having to shake anyone’s hand.

“If I don’t give you a hand, nobody will be offended,” he said. “I don’t have it with anyone, it’s just for safety.”
