Claudio Ranieri returned to Cagliari after 31 years and proved he’s keeping up with the times by revealing his secret weapon: a smartwatch.

The 71-year-old coach had effectively started his management career by taking Cagliari from Serie C to the top flight from 1988 to 1991.

He is now back in Sardinia and made his ‘debut’ today with a 2-0 Serie B victory over Como at the Unipol Domus arena.

Ranieri was spotted during the match whispering something into his wrist, so naturally Sky Sport Italia asked him about it afterwards.

“I was talking to myself!” he joked. “I have these new telephones and smartwatches, so I record notes and when I watch the game back, I know which moments to look for.

“Some write things down, I prefer to record, that way I can continue watching the game.”
