Claudio Ranieri’s position at Nantes is increasingly tenuous after he openly invited the President to fire him.

There had already been tension this week when he missed the dinner celebrating the club’s 75th anniversary because he “couldn’t find a parking space” and then flew to London instead, as he had reports his home had a leak in the ceiling.

President Waldemar Kita then told Ranieri not to use captain Leo Dubois against Lyon, because the defender already has a deal to join them next season as a free agent.

Dubois was in the starting XI anyway and notably at fault for the second goal in a 2-0 defeat.

After the final whistle, Ranieri was interviewed by Canal+ and made his feelings perfectly clear.

“Of course, all Presidents criticise when you don’t win games. If the President isn’t happy with me, there’s just one thing to do.”

Although there are reports of Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Mancini being the main choices for the Italy job, Ranieri has to be in the running and would be considerably cheaper than these alternatives.

He had started the season so well at Nantes, but has now won only two games in 2018.
