On the verge of making history with Premier League minnows Leicester, Ranieri has been tipped as a potential successor to Antonio Conte on the Azzurri bench after Euro 2016.

“I have never heard from (Federation President Carlo) Tavecchio,” he told La Repubblica newspaper.

“It is me who doesn’t feel ready to lead Italy. I prefer to stay at Leicester. Seeing as the FIGC do read my statements, perhaps that is why they haven’t called me.

“I’d stay at Leicester for another eight years. I’d happily end my career here. If the President and the fans are happy, then so am I.”

What is the key to the Foxes miracle that has taken them to the top of the Premier League?

“The lads are dealing well with the pressure and can enjoy the moment. It’s a great story. This is the kind of chance that passes by only once in a lifetime. Now or never.

“We are a group of people with characteristics that get along magically. The players have my same temperament, they believe that in life character, tenacity and humility are almost everything.

“I love my players like children and they feel the same way. We make pacts between us and we respect them.”
