Cagliari just hired coach Claudio Ranieri and could reportedly have another intriguing return to Sardinia for Radja Nainggolan too.

The Serie B side are struggling in mid-table and need to reboot their campaign if they want to be in the running for promotion back to the top flight.

They sacked coach Fabio Liverani and appointed Ranieri, who had already taken Cagliari to promotion from Serie C to the top flight during his first spell here from 1988 to 1991.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, that might only be the beginning, as Ranieri has also requested the arrival of Nainggolan in January.

The Belgium international is a free agent after his brief experience with Royal Antwerp came to an end, as his contract was terminated by mutual consent due to disciplinary issues, including smoking on the bench during a game.

The 34-year-old is very attached to Cagliari, where he already spent much of his playing career from January 2010 to January 2014, then again from 2019 to 2021.

His wife is from Sardinia too, and he would relish a return, even if it means playing in Serie B.
