Napoli goalkeeper Rafael is today in Brazil set to undergo surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament knee injury suffered.

The highly-rated 23-year-old sustained the injury during last Thursday’s Europa League Round of 32 draw at Swansea and is facing a considerable length of time in recovery.

Initially reported by his agent as set for surgery today in Rome, the goalkeeper is instead in Brazil for the procedure today, to be carried out by knee specialist Rene Abdalla.

Il Mattino report that the decision to switch to the Sao Paulo health facility was Rafael’s, having used it twice before, whilst he will be accompanied during the early days post-surgery by a member of the medical staff.

On from today’s procedure to rebuild the joint in his right leg, the ‘keeper is expected to stay in Brazil for two-and-a-half months, before then returning to Naples.

Napoli’s medical team are apparently looking at preseason training as a return date for Rafael.
