Belgium doctor Kristof Sas has no doubts that Inter striker Romelu Lukaku will make it for the World Cup but warns that it’s a ‘race against the clock’ to have him fit in Qatar.

The Belgium international is set to return to action after almost two months on the sidelines because of a severe muscle injury.

He is expected to be involved in Wednesday’s Champions League match against Viktoria Plzen, but not from the start.

Belgium’s federal doctor Kristof Sas has provided an update about the 29-year-old ahead of the World Cup. Sas has no doubts that the Chelsea loanee will make it to Qatar: “But of course, he has been out for a long time,” Sas told Het Laatste Nieuws. “It will be a race against the clock, not to get him medically fit, but at a high level.

“Rhythm is important for every player, although it becomes less important once they have more experience.

“Now, of course, there is a big difference with the ‘normal’ timing ahead of a big tournament. Normally there is a big gap between the end of the season and the start of the World Cup or European Championship.”

Serie A stops on November 13, one week before the beginning of Qatar 2022.

Lukaku scored one goal in three appearances since his return on loan from Chelsea and according to the latest reports in Italy, he wants to remain at the club beyond 2023, when his loan spell ends.
