Club Brugge boss Michel Preud’homme has emerged as a contender for the Fiorentina job next season.

There is palpable tension between Paulo Sousa and the administration, so many expect him to walk away when his contract expires in June 2017.

Some papers even suggest Sousa could be axed early if he suffers a particularly heavy defeat to Inter on Monday night.

Several candidates have been mentioned for next term, including Napoli’s Maurizio Sarri, Massimo Oddo of Pescara, Chievo Coach Rolando Maran and Roberto Di Matteo.

Now La Nazione newspaper claim Preud’homme is in the running and has been approached several weeks ago.

The 57-year-old former Belgium goalkeeper is currently on the bench of Club Brugge, who he joined in September 2013, and is under contract to June 2019.

After retiring from football, he remained at Benfica as technical director and gave Jose Mourinho his big break.

His management career began at Standard Liege in 2000, split by another spell as technical director, going on to KAA Gent, FC Twente in Holland and Saudi side Al-Shabab Riyad.

Preud’homme has been voted Coach of the Year in Belgium for the last two seasons running, having taken Club Brugge to their first Jupiler Pro League title in 11 years.
